Fixing Things

Instead of a well coordinated outfit or close-up shots of food, I have images from a flood damaged house to share with you today. I spent Memorial Day weekend on a three day disaster relief trip, doing electrical wiring, insulation, and paintwork for two days in a town that has suffered severe flood damage within the past year. In light of this three day weekend that often gets allocated towards traveling or recreation, and with the recent disaster in Oklahoma, I thought I'd share another way to spend the pockets of free time we possess throughout the year.

I've always loved doing service work and reaching out to others. There's something fulfilling about sacrificing time and energy for the sake of something greater than yourself. Most of the time it doesn't feel like a sacrifice at all. It's such an incredible way to remove yourself from the rhythm of everyday life for a little while and see the world through a different lens. Plus, there's so much to be gained in the process. After this weekend, I now know how to wire a room for electricity and put in insulation before the drywall goes up.

So whether you give back regularly or haven't done so at all, I encourage you to do it in the future. Help out in a soup kitchen. Go build a house. Volunteer with an after school program. Bake cookies for the volunteer fire department. Walk some dogs at the animal shelter. God gave us all skills and abilities for a reason, so we ought to make the most of it. :)
